Is It Safe to Drive With an Exhaust Leak?

An exhaust leak is not something to ignore. How urgent it is depends on the leak location, whether fumes can enter the cabin and whether parts are loose or contacting other components.

Ask Tim About Your Vehicle

The carbon monoxide concern

Carbon monoxide cannot be seen or smelled. An exhaust leak may allow dangerous gases to enter a vehicle, particularly with windows closed or when idling.

If you smell fumes in the cabin

Stop the vehicle in a safe place, shut off the engine, move everyone into fresh air and do not continue driving until it has been inspected. If anyone feels dizzy, weak, nauseated or develops a headache, seek urgent medical help.

Loose or dragging exhaust parts

A hanging pipe can strike the road, damage other parts or come loose. A hot exhaust touching nearby materials can also create a hazard.

Can a small leak wait?

A small-sounding leak is not automatically safe. Without checking its location, it is difficult to judge the risk. Arrange a professional assessment promptly.

What a repair might involve

A sound repair could involve a gasket, flex pipe, flange, weld or replacement section. The condition of the surrounding exhaust determines the approach.
