What changes the price?
The vehicle design, accessibility, amount of corrosion, condition of nearby joints and cost of replacement parts all affect the estimate. A leak in an easy-to-reach straight pipe is different from a rusted assembly over the rear axle.
Repairing a connection versus replacing a muffler
A flange, hanger or short pipe section may be repairable if the metal is strong enough. If the muffler shell has rusted through in several places, replacement may be the safer long-term choice.
What about exhaust welding cost?
Welding costs depend on preparation, access and whether clean, solid metal remains. Welding over paper-thin rust usually does not make a durable repair.
Why an inspection helps
Photos can help Tim understand the problem, but a firm quote may require seeing the underside of the vehicle. A fair estimate should explain the proposed work and what might change if hidden corrosion is found.

Ask which parts are being repaired or replaced, whether surrounding metal is solid, and whether additional joints might fail during disassembly.
