Ticking or hissing noises
A small leak near a gasket or manifold can produce a ticking sound, particularly when the engine is cold. A leak farther back may create a deeper rumble.
A louder or rougher exhaust note
A split flex pipe, failed flange or rusted-through section can change the exhaust sound. Noise alone does not identify the exact failed component.
Exhaust smell inside the car
Treat fumes entering the cabin as urgent. Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, and exhaust contains other harmful gases. Stop driving and arrange an inspection before using the vehicle again.
Visible soot or damaged joints
Black soot near a joint can suggest escaping exhaust gases. Rusted bolts, missing hangers and separated pipe connections are also clues.
How leaks are located
A careful visual and sound inspection, sometimes with suitable diagnostic equipment, helps locate the actual opening. The repair should address the source rather than only the noise.
What can be repaired?
Depending on condition, repairs may involve welding a sound pipe section, replacing a gasket or flange, repairing a hanger or fitting a replacement component.
